Working with diamond and CBN

The very hard abrasives Diamond and CBN (cubic, crystalline boron nitride) are important materials for processing surfaces. After diamond, CBN is the second-hardest known material. These materials are irreplaceable for processing the surface and cutting many materials . Their use is often more efficient and economically advantageous than using conventional tools. Their high degree of hardness offers especially long service lives.

CBN has a similarly high thermal conductivity as diamond. It has five times the thermal conductivity of copper. This means that the heat developed during a grinding process can be absorbed by the grinding disc, and can then be dissipated to the coolant or into the environment. So the workpieces heat up much less than, for example, when grinding with corundum. In turn, this ensures that the structure of the peripheral zone is less affected. The relatively high grinding temperatures do not affect CBN chemically when processing iron, nickel or cobalt .
